We are here…..

October 30, 2007

…but our luggage is not! Oh, well. We had a safe and uneventful trip over. From LA to NY, Sean and McKenna were angels. Not one complaint. Valerie was a different story! She threw several fits on the plane and its hard to stop her from kicking the seat in front of her when she was seated across the isle from me. The three kids sat in the middle section and I sat acress the isle on one side and John st across the isle on the other side. From NY to Kyiv, Sean and Valerie were angels and McKenna screamed half the way. She does not like to sleep sitting up. I could not comfort her no matter what I did. We were all pretty exhausted when we got here.

We spent two hours at the Kyiv airport waiting for them to VERY SLOWLY unload all the luggage from the plane. After all that wait, ours was not there. It should arrive tomorrow (Wed) and will be shipped to Nikolaev where we will staying on Thursday. So we are looking pretty ratty and feeling out of sorts, but doing well. We all went to bed at 6p.m. last night, the kids were awake at midnight raring to go! We got up, fed them breakfast and made them go back to bed. They slept again until 6:30 in the morning. We are all feeling better today.

Our SDA appt. today went beautifully. We got our referral for Misha and Dima as expected. Dima is a doll. He looks very similar to Misha. We will have two boys that look alike, like our girls look alike. The kids were absolute angels in our SDA appt Everyone was amazed how well-behaved our kids were 🙂 Little to they know we bribed them to be quiet for the appt. The new adoption center is very nice compareed to the old NAC where we went last time. The staff was warm and friendly.

Our team has taken great care of us. Last night we stayed in an apt on a barge on the Dnipro River! The barge is owned by YWAM and our new friends here in Kyiv arranged our accomodations for us. It’s very nice. Our friends made us home made soup and snacks yesterday and walked us around to help us exchange money and go to the store. They have two 9 year old children adopted from Lugansk. Our kids and their kids went to the playgroung to run off steam yesterday. Today, since we are all dressed up we are staying away from the dirty playground. Our clothes have to last us another two days until our luggage arrives! So we climbed the seven flights of stairs to our friends apt today to burn off steam.

Our facilitator team treated us to a wonderful lunch on the river. We feel right at home here this time – much different from last trip when we were very nervous.

Now, we have our plane clothes washing and hope to dry them in two hours to leave for Nikolaev. We will pick up our referral paperwork from the SDA this afternoon and head to Nikolaev. Kostya (many of you met Kostya at our house over Easter) will be our driver and facilitator! He has found us an apt in Nikolaev to stay, not in Ochakov as planned, Evidently there is no heat or hot water in Ochakov and he did not want us to stay there. So we will communite daily from Nikolaev (about 40 minutes). We will visit both orphanges tomorrow.

We may not be able to e-mail or update this blog for several days until we get settled and learn our way around. We will get to meet Misha and see Dima again tomorrow (Wed). The kids are so excited.

So, that’s the update for now. The next few days will be hectic. Feel free to call if we can’t update by computer.
Love,
Laurel

I\’m glad your SDA appointment went well.  You\’ll see many differences in this trip I expect.  we were much more comfortable going back to Ukraine after we\’d been one time.  It helps that you know so many people there now.  Good luck with your travel to Nikolaev and we hope to hear from you soon.

Preevyet!  Kag dah la, Boylan?  I have been thinking of you all day.  I am so glad that things have gone so smoothly.  A barge!?!  Really???  I was in the healthfood store today and saw, HALVA.  It was our favorite treat when we were in Ukraine.  I got so excited.  Then… I read the ingredients.  It was not the same.  Oh, so disappointing.  I told Rob that we have to go back to Odessa next summer for our family vacation to see our family there and to stock up on our favorite yummy treats.  Have a joyful trip!  Meridith
